Leaders from the House Energy and Commerce Committee sent a letter to America’s top broadband providers on Friday, requesting information on a hack that was only recently reported. Last week, a news outlet reported that sensitive information had been breached from the networks of AT&T, Verizon Communications, and other high-profile companies.
The hackers focused on systems the federal government uses for court-authorized wiretapping. The timing of the hack is uncertain as is the amount of time the hackers held access to the information.
“There is a growing concern regarding the cybersecurity vulnerabilities embedded in U.S. telecommunications networks,” Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Ranking Member Frank Pallone co-wrote in the letter. They asked for details on what information was seized and when the companies learned about the intrusion.
